Jupiter: Solar System’s Largest Planet
The largest in the Solar system and the second brightest planet in the night sky
We live on a planet called Earth. It is orbiting an average-sized star, the Sun, which is roughly 150 million kilometers away from Earth. The Sun with gravitationally bound eight planets and many other bodies, like the moons, asteroids, comets, etc. form a system, we call the Solar System. This Solar System is located in the Orion Arm of the Milky way galaxy.
The planets in our Solar System are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Earth is the only planet in our solar system which can sustain life. Other planets in the solar system play a very important role in supporting life on Earth. The most important role in protecting Earth is played by a gigantic planet, called Jupiter. Jupiter is over 1,300 times the volume of Earth, which means 1,300 Earths can fit inside of it. It is the largest planet in the solar system and can be seen with the naked eye.
Jupiter was first observed by Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei in January 1610. He also discovered its four moons, Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto. These moons are called Galilean moons.
